Mantis is a ground-breaking new electronic tire temperature sensor, designed specifically for motorcycles. Using a sophisticated infrared sensor, the Mantis reads and displays to the rider front and rear tire surface temperatures in real time.

The Mantis non-contact infrared sensor utilizes a 17 bit analog to digital converter and a powerful digital signal processing unit. With a resolution of 0.02°C, the Mantis sensor is a highly precise measuring instrument.

The Lens:

A proprietary lens serves to create a wide-angle field of view for the sensor to observe infrared radiation emitted from the tire's surface. Additionally, the lens protects the sensor from being damaged by road debris.

The housing:

Encapsulating the senor's electronic component assembly is a durable injection-molded polycarbonate housing.

The display and Processor:

The Mantis display unit houses a glare-free liquid crystal display and a processor capable of converting raw data from the thermal sensor into valuable human-readable information, in real time.

Programmable alerts:

Programmable alerts can be easily set, and are useful in alerting the rider when his/her tire temperatures exceed the desired range.

    Useful piece of kit

The Mantis is no doubt a very handy thing to have, not only for tire life but safety as well. I did however run some testing of the unit by comparing its displayed temp with my handheld. Temps where reading roughly 30° lower then my handheld. So i reverted back to pressure gains to confirm which was more accurate. It was my handheld. Now, the fact that the Mantis isn't more accurate does disappoint, but by simply adding 30° to its read out, I get relatively accurate temps providing me with data that I normally wouldn't have

    Another useful piece of data.

When I first saw this I got pretty excited. Now you're able to see what tire temperatures REALLY are versus guessing based off of pressure increases. I will say that the displayed temperature may vary from the ACTUAL temperature of the tire, but it still provides a reference you can work off of. For example, my race tires were tearing up pretty badly. Indicated temps were in the 120 degree range on the rear. I opted to try less pressure, which increased contact patch, and therefor heat, which was verified by the Mantis showing me a temp in the 140 degree range. The rear tire looked considerably better as well. On another occasion the weather was cooler and I was able to determine the tires were not getting hot enough. You can only drop the pressure so much, but being able to see the tires weren't quite hot enough let me know not to push it as hard. It's handy, no doubt about it.
