1. FlashTune ECU and QuickShift Kits
This review is for the FlashTune Kawasaki Ninja 400 QuickShifter Kit, but I feel you can’t talk about it without starting with the Type 4 ECU flash kit. My interest was in correcting the lean spots (decl pops) and doing something about the abrupt off-throttle engine breaking. Kent from FTECU said their map would do what I wanted so off to STG I went. My little Ninja has a Yoshimura Alpha slip-on and a DNA air filter installed.
The ECU flash kit was pretty easy to installed and Brian’s STG install video was invaluable for the computer part. I also took the opportunity to install a Graves Air Switching Valve Block Off Plate and completely removed the purge valve with canister (AutoZone sells rubber plugs for the throttle body suction ports). I left the Kawasaki O2 sensor enabled.
FlashTune’s unrestricted ECU flash worked as advertised and completely changed the bikes throttle response. It’s now very smooth and linear. There’s no decal pop, and the off throttle response no longer throws you over the front when quickly rolled off. Pulling the spark plugs 2,000 miles in shows the mixture to be spot on. The increased fuel consumption is so small it's hard to quantify.
I have a quick shifter up and blipper down on my BMW, so I knew it would be a nice addition for the Ninja even though its only for the up direction. The kit requires sizing the left handed thread shift link with a Dremel cutoff wheel, but the rest of the installation was easy. The upshift is very strong so I wish the FlashTune computer program would allow adjusting the ignition cut time, but I’m very happy with the product.
