Transitions adaptive sun wear products have a range of light transmission levels, all optimized for the specific activity the product is designed for. Specifically, the SHOEI Transitions adaptive shield:
- Non-activated - virtually clear
- Activated - darken to a 15% light transmission level at 72 Fahrenheit and 23 Celsius
- Full activation in two minutes
- Fades to 50% transmission in two minutes
- Like all Transitions products, the visor blocks 100% of UV rays

TEMPERATURE
Like all photochromic products, temperature can cause fluctuation in performance. UV rays activate the photochromic molecules through a photochemical process - this makes the shield darken. The fade back reaction is actually driven by heat - so in extremely hot temperatures, the photochromic molecules are actually fading back while they are activating - this prevents the shield from fully darkening. Transitions lens technology is the most advanced in the industry, and is the least temperature sensitive, but there will be some performance variables depending on the temperature.

Awesome shield
What more could you ask for!? Installation was simple and I love the fact that I don't have to worry about having to carry sunglasses or having to change shields for all-day trips that sometimes lead into nightfall. It's dark when it's sunny and clear when it's dark. Love it!

Awesome Shield
Shield starts to change as soon as it hits bright light, and decreases as the sun sets. Definitely beats carrying around an extra visor. Good investment.

Great shield
The transition from clear to dark is great. It is not an immediate change but gradual. On partially sunny days it darkens about 50%. Fit was perfect as expected. Pin locks accommodate the anti for insert w no problem. I am thoroughly impressed by this shield.

Really cool!
Ok, so this is a great shield! The Transitions technology works great and really doesn't take much time to change at all. The vision is clear though the lens and fits perfect (as it should coming from Shoei). So, the reason for the 4 star rating instead of 5? Well, first, I have to say that this is one damn expensive shield! You can buy a clear, medium, and dark shield all for the same price as this one. Of course, this shield should take the place of all 3 of those, so.... my second reason for less than 5 stars is that the shield does not get really dark. I would put the tint just past a medium dark. I really wish that it would just get a bit darker when the sun is going full blast. Other than that, the shield is really great and is nice in the winter when it gets dark so early. No need to carry multiple shields or wear sunglasses under a clear shield. I would recommend this item if you can afford it, but if you like your shields dark, I would not waste your money on this one.

Love not having to change shields!
I purchased my transition shield on Thursday evening and it arrived on Monday morning. Fast shipping! I've been able to ride a couple of times now in the hot sun (88 deg) and I loved not having to change shields when the sun went down. My last helmet, a Shoei RF-1000, had a medium smoke shield on at all times. I hated having to carry a clear shield so I just got used to riding at night with it. Riding around town at night or when the moon was out it wasn't so bad but man... when I took a trip to deals gap to ride the dragon and was riding after dark in the mountains with no moon I'm not ashamed to admit I was a little scared. I had to have my riding buddies take the lead so I had a little more light to see by. With this shield.. problem solved. Never again! As for how dark it gets, I would say it gets to the same level as a medium smoked shield from shoei. It's not black by any means but this morning riding to work facing straight into the sun was not bad. It did not bother me at all. Again, it's not black but it's what I was already used to so I am comfortable with it. Now for the price. I would like to see it sell for around $100. Since it's taking the place of two shields I think that would be fair but $150 was a little steep. But, obviously I thought it would be worth it!?!? I would buy another one if it came down to it. You should buy this shield!!!

So far so good
A few hundred miles of daily commutes in sunny Southern CA plus 1 track day and this seems to handle well in the sun. Personally I like it jet black, but changing face shields is just one more thing. I only hope this shield hold up, at least before I scratch it.
